Recently, the concave and convex glass picture of Pendry Hotel released on the official platform of NorthGlass has been praised by the project owners, designers and curtain wall consultants.

The development project in West End of Manhattan located between 9th and 10th Avenue and West 31st and West 33rd Streets as part of the revitalization program in the entire West End of Manhattan, the plan required six buildings —— four of which designed by SOM Architects, and retails, offices, homes, and hotels will also settle in this area.

Pendry is a new international brand of luxury hotels from Montage, combining a visual experience and thoughtful service tailored for high-end customers. Each hotel in Pendry injects a unique perspective on the contemporary style and incorporates the artistic culture unique to the local city.

The Pendry Hotel in the West End of Manhattan is refreshing with its curved profile and elaborate details. The facade is in the form of “repeated symmetry” wave display. The protruding design of the window sill promotes the connection between the interior space to the external environment, where each room has more natural light compared to traditional square buildings. The Empire State Building reveals the essence of New York from the inside of building.

Stopping by the street and looking up at the Pendry Hotel, the top forms a beautiful crown, and the undulating curves become one of the iconic features of the building. This shape is particularly unique in many traditional structures in New York City, but not abrupt personality.

In order to highlight the soft and bent glass facade geometry, Tianjin NorthGlass offers the owners three solutions: the first is high-transparent glass, which exposes the interior layout and damages the integrity of the appearance of the building. The second scheme is glass and reflective glass coating, which does not conform to the elegant temperament of Pendry Hotel, and is easy to cause light pollution. The third scheme, also the scheme finally selected by the owner, adopts dark colored glass, 8mm thick crystal gray substrate, which plays a perfect shielding effect. At the same time, the concave and convex bending technology of NorthGlass tempering makes the glass film system at the same level, ensuring the unified color of the whole glass.

The Pendry hotel all adopts single insulating glass, including flat tempered glass and concave and convex bent glass, totaling more than 1,700 pieces, with a total area of 4,500 square meters. The minimum radius used on the curved curtain wall is 1.45 m, such a small radius to ensure the accuracy and color difference is also very challenging for NorthGlass, because the small radius has higher requirements for arc accuracy. When the sample came out, it successfully passed the high standard examination, and the bent tempering processing technology of Tianjin NorthGlass was unanimously recognized by the owner and the architect. “Glass processing and combination with structural parts require extremely high precision, and these small radius glasses create a perfect wave shape,” said project manager Darren Allen.

Next, a series of high-intensity tests combined with the installation structure were carried out to ensure the reliability and safety of the curtain wall.

The Pendry Hotel is expected to be completed this year, and construction of the entire West End of Manhattan development is expected to be completed by 2023. The 85-meter hotel will be the first Pendry hotel in New York City. This is another realistic “super glass” created by NorthGlass. The innovation of production technology promotes the continuous changes of the city. The design enables the urban growth, daring to imagine and designing for the city, NorthGlass also gives different visual “special effects” to the urban architecture.
